Finding Balance In Our Self-Views

This month, we’ve been talking a lot about mindset. I want to take that further and share about shame and humility.

Over the weekend, I was listening to The Bible Recap Podcast with Tara-Leigh Cobble. And she said something that I had never thought about before. First, she talked about shame, and she defined shame, as an accusation of who you are as a person. Unfortunately, we will shame ourselves and others will shame us.

God will never, ever shame us.

We have to realize that if we feel shame, it’s something from the enemy, not God, because He loves us unconditionally, and He does not want us to view ourselves shamefully.

Tara-Leigh went on to talk about humility and said that humility is rightly viewing ourselves, which means that we’re neither building ourselves up, nor are we beating ourselves up. So often, we just think about humility as being puffed up, being greater than what we really are. But we don’t think about humility as not beating ourselves up. We want to have a right view of ourselves, a good balance.

That’s how God wants us to be.   He wants us to know that we are undeserving of His love, but He still loves us unconditionally. We humble ourselves by having that balance. We are not building ourselves up too much or beating ourselves up too much.

I encourage you to really have a balanced view of humility. If you are more on the side of feeling shame and beating yourself up, please make the effort to stop that. See yourself as God sees you.

God wants us to know that we are loved by Him. And He wants us to have His mindset, which means that we are His treasured possession and that He will guide us in changing our mindset and not feeling shame or beating ourselves up.

I hope that you will think about all those times that you may talk negatively about yourself in your mind, or you talk negatively about yourself in front of others, even in front of your children. It’s very harmful to your mindset.

Take the time to reflect and try to humble yourself. Create that good balance within yourself.

And remember – you are God’s treasured possession… and He doesn’t make mistakes.
