WHEN YOUR CONFIDENCE IS SHAKEN

There will always be times when we lose our confidence. Let’s learn about 2 amazing women in the Bible who knew how to remain steady in their time of need.

Life will always bring us hurt, pain, disappointment, and inconveniences, but God promises us that He will never forsake us during difficult times. The hard times can be so much more manageable when we allow Him to comfort us and guide us.   “You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord, is the Rock eternal.” Isaiah 26:3-4

As we talk about confidence, I hope we can gain inspiration from some Bible women who had every reason to lose their confidence but chose to remain steadfast in their dedication to the Lord.

A great example for choosing not to have our confidence shaken is Shiphrah and Puah. Their story is found in Exodus 1. Both women were Hebrew midwives that were ordered by the Egyptian pharaoh to kill all Hebrew boys that were born. Since the midwives were loyal to God and His ways, they refused to follow the pharaoh’s instructions. (Side note: this is the first recorded incident of civil disobedience in the Bible)

When Pharaoh found out the midwives had disobeyed him, he summoned them and asked why they had let the Hebrew boys live. At this point, Shiphrah and Puah had every reason to lose their confidence. Pharaoh had the authority to kill them for being disobedient.

How could these ladies stay strong in their confidence when they were likely going to be killed for their choices? Would they regret their decision and beg for pharaoh’s mercy? Would they trust in the Lord’s protection for their obedience?

We find out in Exodus 1:19 that Shiphrah and Puah never wavered in their confidence. They boldly told pharaoh that “Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive.”

To have that kind of steadfast confidence, we must remain rooted in God’s identity and not the world’s identity. For the midwives’ obedience, God blessed them.

May we always remember the example of these brave, confident women and stay steadfast in our own confidence!
